Equality for everyone
Ruby Yolima Pinzón wants to grow coffee. She does not let the fact that she was born deaf stop her. Together with 30 colleagues she is enrolled in the programme 'Education for the Future' in her home region Santander.
Going to school was never an option for Ruby, because there are no schools nearby that teach in sign language. However, national organisation for coffee growers FNC and the Efico Foundation consider diversity an added value to their agricultural project. The group welcomed her with open arms. She got to know quite a few peers during the training. And she is learning useful, practical tips to expand her coffee plantation. With her father interpreting for her, she is able to understand everything.
In the meantime, there are more than 2,000 blooming coffee plants on the piece of land her parents gave to her. 'I want to continue the work of my parents and grandparents. And I want to show everyone what I am capable of.' Good luck, Ruby!
