Solar kiosks in Benin

In many African countries, it gets dark at 6 pm. This means that people often use oil lamps, torches, and disposable batteries. These are not just polluting, but also dangerous. A much safer and cleaner alternative are solar lamps. Thanks to Solar Zonder Grenzen, the people of Benin can now rent lamps that run on solar energy. And this allows children to do their homework completely safely.

Solar lamps bring light into the home

Solar Without Border’s objective: to give light to 150 families using solar energy. This organisation collaborated with Eco-Benin, a non-profit organisation that stimulates local development. Together, they install solar panels on the roof of a kiosk in each village. There, the people can rent a solar lamp. The school principal and teachers encourage parents to get this kind of lamp. For 76 cents, a family can make use of solar light for a whole month. That is one third the price of an oil lamp.

'In a few days' time, everything was rented out'

Bert Bernolet is the proud initiator of Solar Zonder Grenzen. ‘In the first kiosk, all lamps were rented out in just a few days. So I am very happy about how our work is going.’ The project has been making solar energy available in developing countries since 2008. ‘We install modern technology in the shell of a calabash, a local fruit. And that is how we make a solar lamp. 80% of the solar energy we rent out is used by children to do their homework.’

Start of a production unit

With the start of a production unit in Benin the project now enters its second phase. Young people will be trained to manufacture solar lamps and chargers. They will also learn how to install solar kiosks and how to prospect in new villages.

The production unit was set up in Natitingou, in the north of Benin. This is the country’s poorest region, which means the need for quality lighting is great. Moreover, our partner organisation Eco-Benin has been very active in this region. For instance, they have provided 46 villages in Natitingou with ecological wood fires. Those villages would also be well served by solar kiosks. Thanks to our partner’s great contacts, Natitingou is the perfect operating base for our production unit.

Finally: we will soon be opening four new solar kiosks where we will have home-made solar lamps and chargers on offer. This will allow us to help even more young people.
