India: a sustainable future in organic farming

The Nainital district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand struggles with unemployment and poverty. By providing practical training, we are helping local young people reverse this decline and actively contribute to the future.

Unemployment, climate change, low income for family-run farms, rural to urban migration. There are plenty of challenges for those growing up in the Nainital district in the state of Uttarakhand in North India.

To help reverse this decline, we are investing in practical training that will increase the skills and entrepreneurship of local young people from farming families. In the short term, these training courses will lead to better paid jobs and a better understanding of the production chain. In the long term, we hope that by developing their leadership and entrepreneurial skills, these young people will become driving forces within their local community.

3 training courses for 210 young people

From July 2019 to July 2021, in collaboration with the local partner Partners in Prosperity, we are organising various practical training courses for young people aged 15 to 29. 210 young people will have the opportunity to learn techniques for growing organic rice. They will learn how to maintain and repair agricultural machinery and receive thorough training to develop their entrepreneurial skills, with a view to setting up and running service centres for agricultural machinery.

Exchanges with young people from Belgium

By taking part in this project, young people acquire lots of practical skills that will significantly increase their chances of getting a better paid job. They also get a better understanding of their role within the structure of a production chain. The combination of training, coaching and exchange is designed to ensure that these Indian youngsters (with particular focus on women) can build a more sustainable future in their region.

Reputable local partners

For this project, we work together with local partners. Partners in Prosperity is an Indian NGO that is committed to a healthy and prosperous planet and that works closely with 4,500 organic farmers in the Nainital district.

The training courses are developed in collaboration with renowned partners such as GB Pan University for Agriculture and Technology, the Baroda Bank Rural Self-employment Training Institute (RSETI) and the Fair Farmers Foundation. This provides a solid foundation that will undoubtedly bear fruit in the short term and the long term.

Chain project: organic Basmati rice

Colruyt Group has been active in the Uttarakhand region in India for some time. Under the guidance of experts, a sustainable (organic and Fairtrade certified) rice production chain has been developed in cooperation with small, family-run agricultural organisations. Every year, Colruyt Group buys 185 tonnes of Basmati rice for its own Boni Selection Bio brand. As a result of introducing farming systems such as SRI (System of Rice Intensification), the income of the rice farmers who work with Colruyt Group has already increased by 20% to 30%. In turn, water consumption has fallen by 30% and greenhouse gas emissions by 20% to 30%.
